The Liver Emoji

Liver disease causes two million deaths per year worldwide, making it the eleventh most common cause of death globally. Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease is becoming increasingly more common and affects an estimated 25% of all Americans. Other liver diseases may manifest as cirrhosis, viral hepatitis, and hepatocellular carcinoma as a consequence of  substance use disorder from alcohol and intravenous drugs, suicide attempts, agricultural toxins and blood transfusions. Liver disease is a worldwide problem that affects patients of all demographics and its causes are often modifiable. The integration of the liver into the unicode Emoji keyboard has the potential to raise the general awareness of the liver’s importance and decrease hepatotoxic behaviors.

There exist emoji for multiple alcoholic beverages🍷🍶🍾🍸🍹🍺🍻. There are also emoji for pill, herb and an entire category to food, many of which are ultimately metabolized by the liver.

With the already normalized usage of emoji in digital communication, the liver emoji can be crucial in helping patients with disabilities, limited health literacy or those with language barriers communicate with providers, by the simple act of pointing to or sending an Emoji. Furthermore, this enables nonmedical personnel to discuss the renal system, concepts in health, as well as primary preventions in a simplified way.
